Possible Pregnancy After Tubal Ligation & Uterus Issues: What to Do

Question
i had my tubes done 2 years ago i have 3 kids i have all the signs of being pregnant can i really be i have a d an c an my uterus shrunk in Nov so don't have periods what are the chances of me being pregnant

Answer
Dear Taneesha,

First - sorry about my delay in answering. I needed to help a friend yesterday and was away from my computer all day.

Tubal ligation should be considered an permanent procedure. Occasionally a woman still gets pregnant, despite having had her tubes tied properly. The tubes can evolve in such a way as to try to heal themselves, and sometimes a tract develops that allows egg and sperm to meet. Tubal ligation, regardless of whether the tubes are cut, burned, clipped, banded, or tied, is about 99% effective, meaning that about 1% of women will conceive an unplanned pregnancy after tubal ligation. This failure occurs slightly more frequently in younger women.

The fact that you had a D&C in November which has affected your regular periods may or may not have affected ovulation for you - meaning you may still be releasing eggs.

Given the information you have shared, I would have to say your pregnancy chances seem slim. You didn't specify what symptoms you are referring to which lead you to believe you are pregnant, but most all early pregnancy symptoms are hormonal in nature and can also be related to hormone fluctuations.

If you still believe that you may have conceived a pregnancy, the only way you will know for sure is to test. Make sure to use 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample for the most accurate results.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
