Depo Shot & Pregnancy: Risks & What to Do

Question
i have been on depo for 1year1/2 and i haven't been going regularly to the appointments me and my husband have been trying to get pregnant for a month and i have a lot of pregnancy signs i think i might be pregnant at least one month and i just took the shot yesterday can that hurt my baby? i haven't token a test because i want to take one on the 16 just to be sure.

Answer
Did your periods return inbetween your shots? If so, then you might be pregnant.

I don't understand why you took another shot yesterday if you have been trying to become pregnant. Did you change your mind about having a baby?

The Depo Provera website says that a possible side-effect of the shots can be: "Pregnancy-like symptoms.
These symptoms include sore breasts, nausea, fatigue, and abdominal discomfort." These symptoms usually occur only *after* you have taken the injection, however, so if you had pregnancy symptoms before you took yesterday's shot, and a long time after your previous injection, then it is possible that you are pregnant.

As for whether your baby will be affected by Depo Provera (if you are pregnant), a large study spanning several years  concluded that "use of Depo Provera during pregnancy or breastfeeding does not adversely affect the long-term growth and development of children".

But the study also noted that children exposed to Depor Provera in the womb MAY turn out to be SHORTER in height than normal, though the effect is probably only slight. Also, the study did not test many children over the age of 10, so the effect of Depo provera exposdure on puberty is unknown.

Please see your doctor immediately, so you can get your blood tested for pregnancy. Over-the-counter pregnancy tests may not be accurate since you have taken the Depo Provera shot just now.
