QuestionI had an abortion on October 24th....the weekend afterwards I started using the Nuva Ring. About a week and a half I had sex with my fiance and it is now December 15th ( 6 weeks i guess) I still haven't gotten my period....what is wrong?
AnswerYou can only have a period about two weeks after you ovulate, and most women ovulate between 3-6 weeks after an abortion, though for some women ovulation can happen as early as 2 weeks and as late as 10 weeks. So your period will happen between 4-12 weeks after the abortion. If you haven't had your period by the middle of January, you should contact your doctor.
You will also not get a period if you are wearing your Nuvaring continously without a break. The Nuvaring can be used only for three weeks; after that you should remove and discard it, wait for one week and then insert a new Nuvaring for the next three weeks. This is the only way you can ensure you don't become pregnant again or cause yourself to skip a period, which isn't good for your body.
For the next few months you should expect your menstrual cycle to be irregular. You can have early, late, heavy, light, spotty or even missed periods for 3-4 months. This is normal. But it also means you cannot rely on the rhythm method for birth control. Just keep using the Nuvaring as per the directions, that should be good enough.
