Post-Abortion Bleeding & Pain: What to Expect

had a surgery general anaesthetic abortion on 30.10.07 and straight after the procedure only bled up to the following day. have been worried as my period seemed to be taking long and eventually arrived on 5.12.07. it was fairly light and appeared to subside after three days, but in fact got a bit heavier,i have now been on my period for a total of 12 days, and have had some sharp abdominal pain. is this serious? thanks for any advice.k

Dear Kay,
The bleeding sounds completely normal.  This kind of irregular bleeding is common after a procedure.  Your periods will come back to normal in the next months.  It would be unusual for abdominal pain over a month after a procedure to be related to the abortion, but it is possible.  Most likely it is related to something else. Try just taking over the counter pain medicines.  If these don't help, and the pain continues, you should probably be seen either by your primary care doctor or the clinic where you had the procedure.
