Abortion and Fertility: Understanding Potential Impacts

Question
QUESTION: Hi  dear Joan,
I had an abortion(Vacuum), long ago(b4 8yrs) from my previos relationship. Now am married for 2&1/2 yrs. Initially my husband didnt want children coz of the financial situation so I had 2 abortions with pill(Mifepristone & Misoprostol) in exact 12 mnths time period. Its been 14 mnths since my last abortion now. He's mostly out station travelling for his buisness, so I didn't take OC's except for 1 month. Before these last 2 pregnancies( before marriage), I used to take Levenorgestrel when I was with my ex -boyfriend(again yrs ago) ...But again that was very occasional...Now, My husband & I want a baby but its just not happening... Somehow i feel it is because we r not together as we should have been. Less sex :-), coz of his busy work...However, when I got pregnant the last two times with him, it just clicked in 1 intercourse. Then why is it not happening now? Is there any chance I might have lost my fertility? Any suggestions for me? Do I need to take any medications or treatment?( Or do I just gotta have more sex with Him???-Ha, ha, ha)...Kooking forward to your reply. You could also mail me on ashashaik@yahoo.com, or shaikh.asha@gmail.com...

THANK YOU!!!
ASHA

ANSWER: Dear Asha,
There is no reason you should have difficulty getting pregnancy because of your abortions.  You were able to get pregnant twice after a surgical abortion, and pill abortions do not cause any problems with fertility.  It sounds to me like you need to have sex more often.
This is a common problem when a partner travels frequently.

QUESTION: Dear Joan,
I really appreciate your response. Thank you so much. If could just spare some of your valuable time to answer another query of mine , I would be really grateful. My cousin had an abortion(same pill-mifepristone/misoprostol) last year and now when she went for a checkup, she was told that she got both her fallopian tubes damaged and her fimbriae are clumped. Some doc stated that it was because of her abortion.Could this be really possible? That really concerns me because as u suggested pills r safe enough, then is this really a possibility? Moreover she was told that she may not concieve or may face complications because of this.Is there any suggestion or advice you could provide?

Answer
Dear Asha,
It is not possible that this is a complication of a medical abortion.  Fallopian tube damage is typically from infection or from endometritis, or another medical complication.  RU 486/abortion pill could not cause damage to the fallopian tubes.  It simply causes a chemical release of the "menstrual lining" of the uterus.  The doctor is misinformed.
