Questioni had recently had an abortion in December 06 i am now currently pregnant again! after having an abortion not so long ago would i be considered high-risk? am i more likely to have a miscarriage?
AnswerDear Ashley,
There are increased medical risks associated with each additional abortion. Cervical incompetence is always a possibility. Because abortion requires the cervix to be pried open with metal instruments in a matter of seconds, when the natural process of childbirth opens the cervix gradually over several hours or even a day or two, the cervical muscle could be scarred or weakened significantly. This will make it harder for the cervix to remained closed once a pregnancy reaches a certain stage where it places pressure on the cervix, and the baby could be miscarried.
Please examine your emotional state and determine what is leading you to make these unwise decisions. After one abortion, most women would re-double their efforts and precautions so as not to become pregnant again, but many do not...this is a known risk factor of abortion itself...the urge to get pregnant again to replace the aborted child.
Risky behaviors are a sign of a deeper personal issue, and I would encourage you to seek counseling. They provide free counseling and a host of other free services at your local Crisis Pregnancy Center. To find the one nearest to you, please look in your local phone book under "Abortion Alternatives". There, they will help you with free after-abortion counseling, information about fetal development, (some can even give you a free ultrasound to see your fetus) help applying for financial aid, finding prenatal care, and after birth help with child care, parenting classes, baby clothes, or even adoption if that's what you decide.
Please do the right thing this time. Take responsibility for this little life that you've created. You are the only protection that she has.
