Persistent Bleeding After Abortion: What Could It Mean?

Question
its been 2 months and im still bleeding. its very heavy and a lot of pain. and its been constant for 2 months. i had a check up a couple weeks ago but they said i was fine. but its been a month since then. it doesnt seem like its going to stop anytime soon. is there something wrong? should i go get checked out again?

Answer
Dear Jenn,
I assume you had a surgical abortion, not the abortion pill? It is not normal to have persistent heavy bleeding and pain for two months after an abortion.  The pain might indicate an infection, but I assume they ruled that out when they examined you. More than likely there is some retained tissue that is causing both the pain and the bleeding.  The good news is that retained products are not harmful.  Eventually the tissue will release on its own.  If you go to the doctor and they determine that you have retained tissue, they will repeat a procedure, and that should immediately resolve the problem.  I would recommend that you call them and tell them you are still having these symptoms, and they can help you decide what to do.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
