QuestionHi I am 19 years old, I had a surgical abortion at 10 weeks when I was 15, after my abortion i went straight on to an implant contreception I was on it for about a year and half then had it taken out cause I bleed all the time on it, then from that went onto injection for a month and then bleed all the time with that contreception, so the doctors decided to take me off contreception and run a blood test to make sure everything was alryt everything came back negative and fine, since then wich was 2 years ago I havnt been on any contreceptive, nd my periods are all regular and fine but recently startin a new job they have been late every now and then, me and my partner hav been using the pull out method for the last 2 years and I no this safe but if I was to fall pregnant we wudnt mind, he has slipped up once or twice, but I havnt concieved this way so should I be worried of infertility if I havnt yet fallen pregnant this way.
AnswerHello, selina,
I see you have found out the hard way that many methods of contraception are not good for a woman. As long as you're not married, you shouldn't be having sex anyway, so if you aren't, you don't "need" contraception.
That said, I will address your question. Stress from a new job can cause delays in a woman's period, if the job is stressful. So that's not really an issue. However, I always wonder what a woman means when she asks if pulling out is safe. Safe in what way? That she won't get pregnant, or that she won't get a sexually transmitted disease? You have said you know pulling out is safe. No, it's not. If a woman is trying to avoid pregnancy, she can still get pregnant if the man releases even a drop of fluid, which is actually quite common. And pulling out doesn't prevent sexually transmitted diseases at all. If you partner has ever had any other sex partners, you are at risk, even if he hasn't told you about it.
Surgical abortions do cause infertility. About 14% of women who have one surgical abortion will never get pregnant again. Sometimes it could be because she was only destined to have one pregnancy in her lifetime, but this isn't usually counted in the statistics, because they're counted as another 10% of women who are infertile for one reason or another. Most often, infertility after surgical abortion is caused by scar tissue covering the openings to the Fallopian tubes. If the cover is complete, a woman won't be able to get pregnant from the ovary affected. If it is partial, she could have a tubal pregnancy. If you do get pregnant, and start to experience pain early in pregnancy, you should have it checked out immediately. Tubal pregnancy requires emergency surgery to save a woman's life.
Another reason is that a woman could develop an infection that could lead to infertility. Infections after abortion are actually quite common, especially since many abortionists do not sterilize their instruments properly, if at all. It could be a silent infection that causes pelvic inflammatory disease.
If you have been having sex regularly since your abortion, you probably need to be concerned about possible infertility. A woman will normally get pregnant within a year if she's having regular sex. If you want to have it checked out, please go to a doctor who doesn't do abortions. Abortion is bad medicine, and doctors who do them do not have good medical judgment.
If you do become pregnant, are the two of you prepared to take care of a child? Children thrive better when their parents are married, and an unmarried couple can have problems with their relationship once there is a baby. You should give this serious thought. Apart from any other concerns, having sex when you're not married isn't in your best interests for a large number of reasons.
If you do become pregnant, please be aware there are organizations in UK that will help you with whatever problems you may face. But please don't take any chances. If you two love each other enough to be willing to raise a child together, please consider getting married. Seriously. It is for your own protection as well as the protection of any baby you might conceive.
Please take care. Let me know what happens.
