QuestionQUESTION: Dr. Joan,
I had a surgical abortion one week ago at 9 weeks gestation. my bleeding has almost completely stopped as of today. Though yesterday I passed a few painless clots vaginally. I want to have sex with my boyfriend who is well-endowed. Is it safe? If not can you suggest some alternatives?
Thanks!
ANSWER: Dear Skarlet,
It is best to follow the guidelines of the clinic where you had the abortion. They should have given you instructions about when you can have sex again. After a surgical abortion, they generally recommend 4-6 weeks. There are lots of ways to have sex that can be enjoyable for both of you, without intercourse, including oral sex, or playing with your hands, or some couples enjoy anal sex. This can be a time to learn new ways of being together. If you do decide to have intercourse sooner than recommended, you should make sure to use a condom.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan

QUESTION: Thanks for your reply! Im happy to say its been over 2 weeks since the procedure. I got the Depo shot a few days ago, and was wondering of the side effects and when the shot becomes effective?
AnswerDear Skarlet,
The depo shot should be effective immediately. You do not need to use a second method. The side effects are too much for me to go into online, and should have been reviewed by your doctor. I hope you find it to be a good method for you. Many of my patients are happy with it.
