Post-Abortion Pregnancy Concerns: What To Do?

Question
Hi, I had an medical abortion. I took the first pill at da doc office on aug 8 and the other pills on the 9th. I had unprotected sex on aug 17th. I had my follow up appt on the 20th and my doc said I still had some blood so I will bleed somemore on and off and that I can start ortho evra that day. I started the patch and the bleeding stopped immediately. Its now my forth week (patch free week) and no period. Can I be pregnant again and should I geta blood test done?

Answer
Hello, charisse,

Nobody can tell you whether you are pregnant over the internet, not even a doctor. You have taken some powerful medications, and they have disrupted your delicate hormonal balance. Sometimes contraceptives will stop a period for no apparent reason. Given that the Ortho Evra stopped the bleeding immediately, that even seems likely. It may have been too strong a dose for your system.  They don't exactly tailor the doses on that, they operate on the philosophy "one size fits all." Also, no telling what the pills did to your system. Your best bet is to see a doctor, but I recommend going to someone else, because the the doctor who gave you those pills should never have done so in the first place. The manufacturer of Cytotec specifically says it should NEVER be used by a pregnant woman. This is because there are several ways it can kill a woman immediately (within days). Anybody who would provide that kind of medication is either ignorant or committed malpractice. So please see someone else.

Don't expect things to straighten out anytime soon. You might be lucky, and they might, but don't count on it. Go see a doctor, and let me know what you find out.

If you decide to continue with Ortho Evra, I have another idea. If you're not married, why shouldn't you stop taking the risk of pregnancy in the first place? It's much, much safer. Please take care.
