Post-Abortion Recovery & Birth Control Concerns: A Personal Account

Question
Hi. My name is Jessica I am 21 years old. I had my first and only abortion when I was 18. I believe I was over 7 weeks pregnant about 2 months or so. Anyway, I was given some pills that caused me to cramp terribly. I cried. I was only there for a day. My concern ma'am is that.. I have been off of birth control now for over a year after being on it for a year. It's was the 3 month shot. I decided to stop birth control because I don't like the side effects. I have always had a heavy period and irregular too. But lately like the past year I have noticed a huge amount of blood in between periods. For instance, I started exactly on January 1st @ like 1:30 am. I had a normal period for about 5-6 days. Then come Jan.13th or 14 nth I started again but this time I couldn't stand the flow. At night I fell asleep and woke up in a puddle blood, literally. My boyfriend was very afraid I would faint. I felt use to it but his reaction freaked me out. I think the next morning I woke up and blood ran down my thighs and my legs... I was scared now. I got in the tub and sat. My boyfriend sat on the toilet seat and watched me bleed alot. I cramped and I felt light headed. There were so many blood clots and weird flesh like substance, like it looked like so freaky. I don't know what to think or do. Do be honest I didn't go back for my check up like I was suppose at the clinic I had the procedure done. Please help me. When I talk to my mom or sis-in-law they say I have always had an irregular period but I think it's a bit more than just that. Right? Well, is this normal??? Thank you so much for your time!

Answer
Hello, Jessica,

Your question was in the question pool rather than addressed specifically to me, and I just saw it.

First of all, having an abortion is not normal. Those pills are nasty, even deadly. And they frequently cause serious bleeding like you are experiencing. Also, the birth control could cause you to bleed abnormally when you stop it like that. The fact you sometimes feel faint probably indicates that your blood pressure is low, and this can be due to loss of blood. This is a danger to your life, and you need some medical attention. I hope that by now, you are doing better, and I'm sorry I didn't see your message sooner.

These pills should never be given to a woman who is at least 7 weeks along, because they usually won't do anything. It sounds like they may have done a surgical abortion on you and just gave you some pills to take afterward. If that is the case, it really sounds like they injured you. That would cause that kind of pain, and also all the abnormal bleeding. Heavy bleeding after a surgical abortion is definitely a sign something is seriously wrong.

To control bleeding, you may want to try to get some cayenne into your body. That's red hot peppers. You can get it either through spicy food that has hot peppers in it, or as a supplement. But if you are still bleeding, please see a doctor!

I hope you will be OK. Please don't take this kind of chance in the future. Since you are no longer using birth control, it would be wise not to have sex, since it's not in your best interest when you are not married anyway. Please take care of yourself. Feel free to ask any other questions, or tell me more about your situation, and please let me know how you do.
