Methotrexate & Early Pregnancy: Understanding Your Options

Question
QUESTION: I came across your site and thought it seemed like a valid place to receive some information that I can't seem to find. I am in I believe the 7th week of my pregnancy and when I found out I panicked and went to a clinic t have a medical abortion. I received a shot of methotrexate but have NOT done anything further by inserting the pills. I made a drastic irrational decision in a moment of fear and I want to have this baby!Is there anything I can do? Is there anyway my child can survive? What suggested steps do I need to take next? All I want is to give my baby a chance at life. Please let me know any advice you may have as soon as possible.
Thanks.

ANSWER: Hello, Haley,

I am assuming from what you have said that this just happened.

It is possible that you may be able to save your baby. At 7 weeks, your baby is likely to be making enough progesterone to prevent the drug from having any effect. You should go immediately to a doctor who will test your progesterone levels and see if they are OK. If not, he may be able to give you supplementary progesterone until the baby is making enough. You can find a good doctor by finding an organization in your area that helps pregnant women. You can find an organization by going to this web site:

http://www.pregnancycenters.org/

This web site has a phone number where you can call immediately and you should be able to get some counseling and help.

I am so sorry that you panicked, but this is so common! I will pray for you and your baby. Please let me know what happens. And when your baby is born, please send me a picture!

QUESTION: I cannot believe how quickly you replied! I am in tears because I feel like this is the first sign of hope anyone has given me ( I did this without my partner's knowledge nor any family or friends) And the shot was given to me on Saturday. I have direction to insert the pills tomorrow evening. My next few questions...how much harm can be done to the baby? Is it not a good idea to try and reverse things, because I feel like everyone has told me that and I am so sick of hearing that! Those clinics are a nightmare I had no idea what I was doing and just before I knew it they stuck me with a shot. Sorry about that tangent. Ok I am leaving to go out of town for ten days on Saturday so do I need to one hundred percent see a doctor before then or can I wait until I get back? And will it be harmful to me to not insert the pills? Ever clinic (abortion) that I spoke to said yes it we be highly toxic if I didn't insert them tomorrow, but I don't want to!!!!! Who would you recommend to me? Any OBGYN or does it need to be someone who has had more experience in this area.

Answer
Hello, Haley,

I was surprised you had just written, too! I like to think that is because God has heard your pleas and will be with you, no matter what the outcome is.

Telling you that you have to insert the pills or it will be highly toxic is just scare tactics. Ignore them. The pills are very dangerous, and they can even kill you. Inserting them is also the WORST method, because it can cause a woman to get toxic shock syndrome, and that can kill within hours. Anybody who would give you those pills in the first place, or a shot, has already committed malpractice, doesn't have good medical judgment, and can't be trusted. They SHOULD have counseled with you and screened you and determined if this is what you really wanted. A good counselor would have given you a chance to spare your baby's life, and to think about this decision that can bring about such a drastic change in your future. Rushing a woman into this is sick.

You really need to see a doctor right away. If your progesterone is low, you need immediate supplementation. If you wait until you get back, and the situation is tenuous, you might miscarry without this. So you need to get to a doctor today. Seriously. And no, don't go to just any OB/GYN. Many of them believe in abortion, and they'll do everything they can to force you to complete the abortion.

As I said, go find an organization. They will have doctors who can help you. It's one of the things they do. If a particular doctor is not familiar with this type of situation, then they probably have another who is. Give them a call. They should be answering the phones. The phone number is right on the web site. They may even help you get in touch with someone even though it is still possibly the middle of the night (it is here). And find the organization in your area so you have their phone number as well.

In answer to your other question, by all means, take a reasonable amount of folic acid. Don't overdo it. Just take a normal dose. It may help.

Please keep in touch, and take care. I will be going to bed soon, but you both are in my prayers. We don't know what God has planned for you, but we can beg Him to spare your baby's life.
