QuestionI just had a clinical abortion. I'm 16 and i was at 21 weeks. I had it two days ago, and today when i got out of the shower, i realized my breasts were a little larger, and they felt full..I'm not sure how to explain. But after i dried off and everything i was examining and noticed that very little amounts/ drops of white/milky liquid was discharging out of my nipples.
Is it breast milk? I read online that its cause my body's hormones are still a little wacky and it will take a bit to get back to normal. But i just wanted to know if it was milk, and when will it go away? and is there a way i can make it stop? All of this has been so emotional, and I'm trying to keep it together. Please answer back. Greatly appreciated.
AnswerHello, Samantha,
What you are experiencing is to be expected. The first fluid is colostrum, but it only lasts a couple of days, and then it is milk. If you don't do anything with it, it will go away eventually, though it may get uncomfortable. If that happens, you can "milk" them just enough to relieve the pressure, but no more than that. Some women used to bind their breasts. I don't know if that is helpful or not. A doctor may give you a drug to dry up your milk. I'm not a fan of drugs, but it might be helpful.
I am more concerned about your having had the abortion in the first place. Abortion does a lot of damage to a woman's reproductive system, and could result in birth defects in your future children. To help prevent this, when you do get pregnant, be sure and tell your doctor about it, because there are some things they can do that will decrease the chances. Also, you will be more prone to breast cancer and auto-immune disease. If you have any close relatives who have had breast cancer, you are virtually certain to get it. It kills 1/4 of its victims. It will happen before you are 40. To safeguard against this, I recommend you take Vitamin D3 daily for the rest of your life. A dose of about 5000IU is good; you should have your blood tested occasionally to make sure you are not getting too much. You should have about 75 nl/mg in your blood, but no more than about 100. Also, get thermograms (not mammograms). They are accurate and catch the problem much earlier. Mammograms can actually cause or trigger breast cancer.
If you feel that post-abortion counseling would be beneficial, I can help you find a counselor who understands the issues. This is especially true if you were coerced in any way, or didn't want to have an abortion (it sounds like it, since you were so far along). Let me know if you would like this information.
I hope this helps. Feel free to ask any additional questions. Please, no more abortions. You deserve better. Take care.
