QuestionHi christopher, please could you tell me how a basic swedish body massage would have an effect on muscle performance? thanks xxxx c
AnswerGreetings Christie. Massage is thought to help muscle performance. Sweedish massage, especially petrissage, helps rid the muscle of lactic acid, the toxic by-product that casues the burning sensation after strenuous exercise. That squeezing motion forces out all the metabolites out of the tissue, in much the same way you'd squeeze out s sponge. This helps the muscle recover faster, which allows the muscle to be used again in a much shorter time period.
I am not exactly sure how much credence "Western" medicine has given to this. I do know that it is not uncommon to find massages available at larger races and events, so at least the athletic community understand this benefit.
I hope this is of some help, Christie. Please feel free to write back if you have any other questions. Also feel free to rate me on AllExperts; both positive and constructive feedback help me learn to help others better.
Sincerely,
Christopehr Hall
