Deep Tissue Massage and Hives: Possible Allergic Reaction?

Question
I recently went to an osteopath about lower back problems. Included in the therapy was a deep tissue massage. Almost straight after, I developed painful (and then later itchy) hives but only specific to the area that was most painful during the massage and where she was concentrating the most on. I've had these kinds of massages before and not had this reaction. If it was an allergic reaction to the oil, why did I not get the hives in the other areas that came in contact with the oil and only in the specific region of where my pain mostly comes from? They are raised and sore to touch. Positioned on the lower right side of my back and close to the middle.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Katy,

I'm sorry to hear that you had this reaction but I'm afraid that it is within the range of fairly typical reactions to deep work.  You probably get red marks during most massages and don't know it because they don't hurt - this is called hyperemia and is a typical reaction that many people get.  The deeper the work the more likely the skin will react in stronger ways.  I agree with you that if you were allergic to the oil it would be all over, not just were the deep work was.  Try putting a little ice (or even a bag of frozen peas) over a towel on the affected areas for a few minutes at a time.  It should help bring down the inflammation and dull the sensation til the hives can clear on their own.  If they haven't faded within a few days then a check with your doctor is not a bad idea.

Best Wishes!
