Deep Tissue Massage & Swelling: What to Expect & When to Worry

Question
After receiving a deep tissue massage (lying face down), I was surprised that my eyelids were swollen, as well as my upper lip!  This occurred around 10pm last night; it's 24 hours later and the swelling has subsided a lot--however, I had to take antihistamines every four hours.

I've never had this happen to me--on this scale.  Yes, I've had my eye swell after a massage here and there...but never to this degree.  I stayed home from work because I was so swollen.

Any idea if this is due to the massage? My allergist thinks it may have been a food allergy; however, I disagree because I didn't eat anything out of the ordinary.

Thank you for whatever feedback you can provide.

Answer
Hello Theresa,

Sorry to hear about your predicament but at least it sounds like it is getting better.  While it is certainly possible for a deep tissue massage to cause swelling and redness, for most it is not so pronounced.  Since you bring up allergies, you might ask your therapist what they use for lotion, laundry detergent for their sheets and particularly what their face rest is made of and covered by to see if any of those ring a bell for you or your allergist.

Best Wishes!
