Massage Therapy & Morphine: Important Considerations for Clients

Question
I recently had a client come in who wrote on her intake that she was taking several medications.  Of the ones listed, two were morphine.  One of them is a pump inserted in her stomach 27 years ago and the other in oral form.  I asked the client when the last time she took the medications, she mentioned the pump, which dispenses on a regular basis, and took an oral dosage this morning.  with that information, i explained to her the effects that massage had and the possible consequences.  I then told her that I was uncomfortable giving her the massage.  Needless to say, she was a little upset.  Was I in the wrong or did i act according to ethical standards?

Answer
Hi Jeni

What you did was in accordance to ethical standards. I too would have refused the massage unless I spoke directly with her physician and got a written letter saying it was OK.

In cases such as that Reiki is an alternative. Reiki if you are not familiar is a non-obtrusive Japanese relaxation technique to add to your list of modalities. It can be learned in a weekend.

When you listen to your intuition as you did, it always leads to the appropriate choice for you.
