Swedish Massage Experience: Relief from Knots and Post-Treatment Soreness

Question
I had an hour swedish massage yesterday.  She said I had several knots in my scapula and on my neck.  She worked on those, especially on my scapula quite a bit.  She said I might be a little sore today.  I was so sore last night that I could barely sleep.  The soreness made me feel like I was going to throw up because the pain was so bad.  It hurt so badly on my neck.  This morning I had my husband look at my neck and it is swollen and tender to the touch.  Is this normal?

Answer
Hello Stephanie,

I am very sorry to hear that you are feeling so sore!  It is not typical for a mere Swedish massage to leave one feeling sore and achey.  Are you sure it was only Swedish work, and not something deeper like NeuroMuscular therapy which while very effective can definitely leave one feeling a bit beaten up the next day.

Without knowing more about your medical history I really can't say why you would be so sore.  Was there any pain or discomfort during the session?  Did the therapist suggest you drink some water or ice your shoulders after the session?

Hope you are feeling better by now!
Mikey
