Flaky Nails: Causes, Remedies, and When to See a Doctor

Question
Hi Victoria!  I have always had really strong, healthy nails.  About a month ago they started flaking and whitening really badly.  I was wondering if that might have been because I used a very old bottle of nailpolish (at least 5 years old.)  However, as soon as they started flaking I removed the nailpolish.  I think they might be improving, but it's hard to tell- they're definately not back to normal.  I tried to ask Susanna about this but she just didn't answer for several weeks and then told me "I have already answered your question"- no hello or anything.  Maybe there's already a detailed answer to that question on the site, but I haven't been able to find it.  Anyway, I'd really like to know if old nailpolish can cause flaking or if I should be worried that I have some sort of nutritional deficiency or something.

Answer
Hi!

I'm sorry that Susanna didn't reply to your question. Perhaps she made an error? I don't know her, so I really couldn't say.
I don't think it's the polish causing the problem.
More than likely it's a 'drying' issue causing the peeling and whitening as you describe it.
Some causes of dryness in nails are:
health
overexposure to water
overexposure to chemicals (cleaning products etc)
overexposure to alcohol (sanitizing hand gel)

What I would suggest at this time is to invest in a good quality cuticle oil, use it twice daily applying at the cuticle and rubbing it down the length of the nail.
When cleaning up about the house and such, use gloves religiously. A good rule of thumb: if you would not put it on your face, don't put it on your hands  ;-)
You will not see improvement right away as the 'old dry nail' is still there. It will help, but not a lot. BUT if you keep it up, when the old nail grows out, and new grows in, THEN you see a large improvement. A good habit is to leave your cuticle oil next to your toothbrush and use it every time you brush your teeth.  Also, keep a small tube of hand/cuticle cream in your purse and try to use that several times daily. In fact, every time you wash your hands, use it.  :-)
You can also try taking vit E capsules and gelatin caps every day to improve the 'natural health' of your nail.
OR eat jello every day (they are both also very good for hair and skin).

I hope that this helps.
Please do not hesitate to contact me again should you have any further questions.

PLease take care
