QuestionHeather I have been getting gel manicures for about a year and would like to stop for a while....should I just trim my nails and wait for them to grow out?
AnswerHi Jane!
Is there a specific reason you want to stop getting them? If you are getting good service from a reputable trained tech with good product, it really isn't necessary to "give them a break."
If it's just because YOU need a break personally, well I understand that too lol. ;) I go in spurts of wanting glam hands, then wanting to have my own boring dirt digging in the garden hands back. :)
If you want to go au-natural for a bit, I would recommend having them removed by your tech, and followed up by a manicure and nail toughening nail enamel until you adjust to "naked nails."
Gel is ultra light and super thin, but it's still weight bearing, and has been protecting your nails for quite some time. After removal (depending on your tech), they will be a bit sensitive, and due to being covered up, the moisture content in your nail plate will be quite high, making them seem super soft, bendable, and nearly see through. If your tech was doing everything right, this will pass in about 3-5 days, and having a manicure after removal with a nail toughener will help get you through this phase comfortably.
Trying to just trim them and grow them out can affect the weight balance on your nail plate, making the ends heavy as they grow out, and can cause breaks and tears in the bed part of the nail, which are painful to say the least.
Good luck! Let me know how everything turns out!
