QuestionQUESTION: Hi. About 7 years ago I used to apply my own fiberglass nail wraps over a glued on nail tip. I'm trying to do it again, but I think I used to use two layers of fiberglass. For example, I can't remember if I used to glue on the tip, cut a piece of self stick fiberglass wrap, then put on a layer of resin, then spray. Is it customary to then put on a second layer of fiberglass, resin and spray?? Thanks for your help.
ANSWER: Vanessa,
Well the first thing I am going to remind you was that was 7 years ago. Thats a very old procedure that really doesn't look that nice or work very well. I am going to suggest you apply a few gel coats to your nails. Its very very easy and paints on like a thick polish. You put your hand under the light for a few minutes and your all finished!! Its so little work and it does not require any filing at all. You can buy the gel at sally's beauty supply for about 10 dollars and you'll need a brush to apply it 5.00$ and you can even get a small light for only 30.00$. So there is really nothing stopping you! If you want I can go through the gel process with you and walk you through it!
Now if you are stuck on these terrible fiberglass nails then yes you would apply the tip then the fiberglass, then resign/glue and spray. For an extra strength nail you can apply a second coat of resign/glue and spray one more time. But you never put two fiberglass layers on because that would look thick messy. Hope I helped a little. Good luck

QUESTION: Megan,
Thanks so much!! You seem to know your stuff! So, if I apply the gel, do I apply it on top of the tip (after glueing on the tip)? How many gel coats do I put on, and do I put my nails under the light each time?? Also, is the gel self-leveling, or do I have to watch out for bumps? I've never worked with it before. And Sally's is where I get my items, so thanks so much for referencing them. You really did help!!
AnswerI would reccomend that you didn't use a tip at all. It would be best to go straight over your natural nails and let them grow out with the gel. It looks beautiful and your nails will grow with the gels and you can shape them however you want.
If you go to http://www.ibdbeauty.com/
you can watch a video on exactly how nails are done and the products you need. That is the IBD website and you don't need to buy that particular brand, you can buy whatever is at sally's or if your licensed then order it from them direct.
But to some up the process real quick you are going to paint on a "bonder" which comes n a bottle that looks like nail polish so thats easy. It goes under the light for 60 sec.
Over that you would apply your builder gel in whatever color you want (Pink, Clear, Or various colors. that goes under the light for 2-3 minutes. Following that it is up to you, you can add another coat or you can just leave it thin. Give your nails a quick buff wash your hands....And then give a gel Top coat for just 60 sec. and your good to go!!
