Question I recently decided to try and grow out my natural nails. I have been wearing tips with a acrylic overlay for almost 20 years. After reading some of the posts on the sites I realized I had also been wearing MMA nails. The odor of the solution was always horrible and the techs wore masks.
Since I knew I was not going to be able to pay for a proper removal (I was sure my place would pry them off and make me bleed.) I decided to try and grow them out till the loosened. Last night 2 of the nails fell off. So today, being the idiot I am and knowing better I very slowly and carefully peeled off the rest.
Now my nails are peeling horribly. I cut down the length to the tip of my finger. I have been applying Nutra Nail all day. My finger tips hurt very bad. Typing is painful. Luckily, all my nails are whole. After reading about MMA I was thankful for that. What should I do to heal these poor little stubs I call nails? Is there anything I can do to help protect from the pain? Money is an issue since I was laid off.
Thank you for your help.

AnswerHolly,
Let me tell you how sorry I am that you have to endure this pain. Sadly, this is what MMA and poor workmanship does to the client.
The best thing to do for now is to keep the nails covered with polish and to use a good cuticle oil several times a day. From now on, do not ever clip or cut your nails. It is not a good idea, as it does make some nails peel. It is best to file the nails.
Your nails right now are probably very, very thin. Because you likely had a dremel used, this thinned them more than they should have been.
Right now do not use anything with formaldehyde in it. At first this seems to work to harden the nails, but over time, too much will make the nails brittle.
I am not familiar with Nutra Nail. There are other products available for you to use. Do you have a Sally's near you? You can go in there and look to see what they have. I know they carry Haken's cuticle oils. Pick up one of them.
I hesitate to have you do this, but you could pick up the brush on nail glue and put two coats of that on. You will need the spray activator also. This needs to be done with great caution as you can burn yourself if you have too much resin/glue on. This will help with the tenderness.
Also, please do not think you are an idiot. You have no idea how many people rip their nails off. Just think what they would feel like if you did allow that shop to take them off!!!
Your nails WILL grow out healthy. It will take some time, so bear with it.
Please let me know how you make out!
buenos dias,
