Gel vs. Acrylic Nails: How to Remove Polish Without Damaging Your Natural Nails

Question
I went to a salon recently and asked for gel nails.  They used a liquid and a powder on top of my nails that hardened very quickly.  I think I actually have acrylic nails.

Then, they painted my nails, applied a clear paint over them, and then I sat under the UV light for a while.  I think that means gel was applied over the polish.

Anyway, I don't want to take the nails off, I just want to remove the polish.  Is that possible?  I've tried using nail polish remover, but the polish is still on there and still very shiny.  It's just chipping and I want to re-paint.

Please help and provide any information that might help me.

Thanks.

Answer
Hola Karen!
Well, you are correct. You do not have gel nails at all. This is a tactic that these shops use on clients that do not know what TRUE gels are. You have a gel type hardener on your nails that does not come off with remover.
You will need to file the product off. Be very careful you do not file too much or you will file your nails. This is almost impossible since I am almost positive you have MMA on your nails and that does not soak off even with 100% acetone.
I suggest you get a low grit file, about 100 grit, and file the "gel" topcoat off. Then you need a fine buffer to get rid of the etching you will have after the "gel" removal.
You may want to find another GOOD salon that does TRUE gel nails. You will pay more, but you will not be duped into something that is not what is being advertised.
(there are some videos on youtube that show how gel nails are done.)
Good luck and feel free to write back if you need more help.
buenos dias,
Lynnette
