Natural-Looking Nail Tips: Achieving the American Manicure Effect

Am I the only person who gets their nails done who wants their nails to look natural?  Ideally, I would love my artificial nails to end up looking like the American Manicure.  I don't want the bright white, sharply defined tip look.  I have had the pink and white acrylic method and acrylic with airbrushed white tips and gel overlay.  I know I could always get plain acrylic and wear an American Manicure, but I'd love a permanent look that seemed natural.  Also, I don't live in NYC or any such place where I can inquire about custom tints for gels.  Any suggestions?
