Silverware Jewelry Making: Resources & Techniques
QuestionDo you know if there are instruction books on making jewelry out of silverware. If there is can you please direct me into where I can purchase them.. thank you
AnswerHello Liz,
I hate to recommend one publisher over another but...currently there is an article on it in I believe jewelry artist magazine for a swell pendant ( formerly Lapidary journal). It is actually a quite easy thing. Most use fork or knife handles and turn them into cuff bracelets, pendants and the like. A bit of piercing adds customisation and a nicer touch than slicing off the utinsel end and adding a jump ring!A former is used to bend after annealing the metal for a cuff, or a ring.Rings are a trickier proposition , unless you simply form and then it becomes adjustable- as it is cold connected- without really connecting, just forming into x size range depending on where the cut is and how finished on that cut side, since, often identifying the metal underneath the plating is not an easy task ( though usually a brass, or monel core under silver plate, so easy solder is your best bet there!)
There are some good instructional videos on make .com. I also saw a few articles in I believe some interweave press mags, wire work may have been one of them, another to check the archives is Art jewelry magazine..but I know Make.com has some videos that show you the process. Start collecting those silver items at yard sales, flea markets and antiques stores- sometimes you'll find treasures of sterling flatware for relatively little money! Good luck!
