Lead Safety in Handmade Ceramic Jewelry: A Comprehensive Guide

Question
I want to make jewelry (necklaces, rings, earrings, etc.) from pieces of old ceramic/plates/tiles found at thrift stores and garage sales. Is there some kind of clear coating I can put on the products that will protect the wearer from any lead exposure? How high would you say the risk of lead exposure is from wearing something like this? Thank you so much for any help!

Answer
Greetings,
I'd say the risk is really minimal. Lead ingress is usually from ingesting food - hot food or soaking - in lead ceramics.
Can't see how this would be the same for jewels.
However, I'm sure you could get a metal lacquer spray if you are really concerned.
Good Luck, P
