Finding Jewelry Schools & Apprenticeships: A Guide for Aspiring Jewelers

Question
Hello, my name is Leah and I am 20 years old, living in Florida.  I have been interested in jewelry and stones for many many years (since I was about 5).  I was wondering if you could give me any advice on what to look for in a jewelry repair and design school (or course).  Also, to become an apprentice do you need schooling first or how do you go about getting apprenticed?  Thank you so much for your time.  I really would like to get into the business of jewelry designing and everything, I am just a little overwhelmed about where and how to start.  Thank you again.
Sincerely,
Leah

Answer
Hello Leah, I think the first thing you need t realise is that you are looking at several different subjects, Repair, Design, Gemmology, these are all different fields.

There are various schooling facilities for all of these aspects but you need to know which one to go for.

What you might find worthwhile is finding work within a jewellery store. Florida has some seriously good jewellers, see if you can get to work for one of them. Once inside you will begin to learn the different aspects of the industry and how it works. This will give you a better ground knowledge from which you can decide on your future.

Hope it goes well, Regards, Brian
