Silver Soldering with a Micro Torch: Troubleshooting Tips

Question
i have prepared my silver properly, but cannot get my solder to flow.
I am using a micro torch for the first time, and want to know if there is a certain distance from the piece or a certain color in the flame that I should use?  I need help!  Thanks

Answer
Greetings Ami,

Using a micro torch is really similar to a bigger propane torch, however with the addition of oxygen it burns a lot hotter.
It's hard to know what the problem is with your soldering; however, like other soldering both pieces to solder should be the same temperature which is easy to know by the colour.
The flame should be a sharp point, and the length/heat of flame is up to your own experience...but it is important to remember that there should be no sound with the flame. If you can hear it 'roaring' then you should be using a larger nozzle.
If all of this sounds correct then perhaps you solder pallions are too large....or you simply aren't getting enough heat.
And if it's a larger piece taht you're working on, then you probably should be using a larger torch.

Hope that helps, P
