Soldering Silverplate Silverware: A Comprehensive Guide

Question
Hello, I have been making jewelry from  silver plate silverware. I have been experimenting with soldering two pieces together but without much luck. They won't fuse together. I am using a micro torch and soldering supplies from my local hardware store. Can silverplate be solder? Any tips on how to join the two would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Bev

Answer
Greetings,

There is no reason why your pieces wont solder together.
You have a number of options.
You could lead solder it, using liquid flux. this is lowest temperature and you should be able to - with care - solder without damaging the electro-plate.
You could use brazing solder which is a mid temperature solder and you would use tenacity flux. The electroplate will likely be damaged using this.
And finally you could use silver solder, with tenacity flux.

It sounds to me that you mightn't be getting enough heat into your piece. both side should be the same colour - ie the same temperature - as you heat them.

Good Luck, P
