Identifying Antique Jewelry Marks: Understanding Ring Hallmarks

Question
Yes I have a old ring that was my grandmother and can not find anithing on the jewel mark that is on the outside of the ring band not on inside like now it also look's like it is two o's,can you tell me when they would have done this putting the mark on the outside the back of the band/thank you

Answer
Tee, I really do not have a full answer for you on this one. Sorry!  I do have possibilities to mention.

The marks on the outside of the band may not be anything to do with the maker or the quality of the band. This might be something placed there at the wishes of the one puchasing the ring.  Look at the marks closely. Do these look "indented" as if stamped into the metal? Do these marks look "cut" into the metal?  If the look is more cut with clean edges and no indentions around the "O's", this is likely engraved.  Makers do not mark with engraving but with a stamp which almost always leaves some indention around the symbols.

I have seen rings with maker's marks on the outside. These mostly appear to be of Eastern or Middle Eastern manufacture.  Often these rings are fairly old.  Perhaps the two o's would have meant something to the buyer at that time.  Today, I certainly have no clue what the marks might be.

These are not any of the standard marks for karat or of a maker which I know.  Sorry, that is the best I can do on this mystery.  I do hope you find out somehow, even if by good fortune.
