Best Jewelry Drill for Gemstones: Budget-Friendly Recommendations

Question
I was wondering what you think is the best overall deal when looking for a jewelry drill?  I'm trying to turn some polished gemstones (agate, bloodstone, etc.) into beads for necklaces and want to purchase a good drill but can't spend a ton of money. Can you recommend a particular brand or model? Thanks!

Answer
HI STACEY,

DEPENDING ON WHAT MATERIAL YOU ARE DRILLING YOU WOULD DEFINITELY NEED A VARIABLE SPEED DRILL MOTOR AND IF POSSIBLE A WATER COOLING DRIP SYSTEM (DRILLING OIL WORKS GOOD TO). THE DRILL BITS SHOULD BE DIAMOND TIPED OR SINTERED FOR EASE OF CUTTING AND SMOOTH SURFACES. THE ACTUAL MANUFACTURER OF THE TOOL CAN BE ANY ONE OF MANY THAT MAKE DRILL MOTORS AND DRILL BITS. UKAM IS A GOOD COMPANY IN CALIFORNIA.THE BEST WAY TO LEARN THE USE OF A DIAMOND BIT IS TO TRY IT ON A LOT OF DIFERENT MATERIALS AND ALOT. TRY IT ON WASTE STONES BEFORE THE GOOD ONES. GOOD LUCK.
