QuestionHi
I have a ladys ring which is 9 carat gold, made in 1938 and has the marking for Birmingham. It has the marking W & G I assume that these are the initials of the manufacturer. I hoped you may have an idea who they were.
Kind Regards
Phil
AnswerG'day Phil and many thanks for your query
Firstly let me say "you luckky puppy" for getting vintage jewelry, for that is the very best value in the world and also Tax Free, which I love...
With regard Hallmarks - the problem is there is no central registry of Makers Marks, and the rest of the world might NOT comply with American Standards anyway. The Hallmarks may simply be a design or model mark, or even a retail store identity mark.
Here is the address of one of my favorite websites but you will need a lot of patience as you browse through each page.
It is http://home.wxs.nl/~luijt005/hallm.htm
The other place you might like to keep an eye on is the 20th Century Antique Jewelry site at http://www.jewellery-antiques.com where there are hundreds of charts and tables and articles. Worth bookmarking.
Hope this helps...
