Identifying Egyptian Revival Jewelry: A Detailed Analysis

Question
Hi Sally, I have a curious necklace which I'm unable to identify. It is probably Czech. The beads are molded white glass melon shapes and chevron, and some little disks. All beads are white threaded and knotted between on black fine string.  Interesting thing about this necklace is that there are two cube white glass beads with two faces. Half of a human face on each corner with animal ears high up at the side of the head, with hieroglyphic symbols. There are two other cube shaped beads but just with hieroglyphic symbols.. The face is not a pharaoh. I went to the Egyptology Dept at  Museum and the faces are identical to the Egyptian God Hathor.Question is , Is this a fertility necklace? why the white beads? and faces.I have seen quite a lot of Egyptian Revival Jewellery from the 1920's but nothing like this and am sure it has to mean something. Can send a picture if you wish . Would love to hear your comments.
Kind Regards, Rosie

Answer
Hello Rose and thank you for your inquiry. Eventhough I love Egyptian jewelry, I am not an expert on the symbolism. The white beads could symbolize fertility from a purist or purity view. Symbols were such a large part of the Egyptian culture and many symbols had multiple meanings depending on how they were used or combined. You might try contacting someone that has an Egyptian jewelry or artifact site for an explanation of the symbols. Here is an interesting site I found. Just copy and paste the below url into your browser address field and hit enter:

Egyptian jewelry is very popular right now so you should have no problem in finding sites online with which to compare your necklace. Good luck and enjoy !
