How to Drill Large Gemstone Beads: A Comprehensive Guide

Question
I bought some large snowflake obsidian marbles that were not drilled. How do I find someone to drill them or can I do it myself? What is the best tool for clearing holes in drilled beads. Sometimes I can't get my stringing materials through.

Answer
Hi Christina,

Drilling holes is not one of my favorite things to do.  I do not mind holes that are 2 or 3 mm deep.  The thicker you go the more difficult.

I use a dremel with a flex shaft.  I use triple ripple drill bits I would use a 1.8mm size or 2mm if you have to go really thick.  You have to take your time and go slow and easy.  Otherwise you will over heat the bit and wear off the diamond.  Use water often to cool the bit, or better yet drip water on it continuously, but lift the bit out often to cool.

I guess to clear the hole use the same thing only match the bore size already there.

Hope this helps you,
