Question
I have a 694 carat golden topez gem.  It was found in Tarryall Mountains in 1967.  I still have the nespaper article on it.  Than it was the largest gem ever found.  I'd like to find out how much it's worth.  If you can help I'd really appreacite it.  Thank you for letting me email you.  Sandy at smax99@hotmail.com

Answer
It really all depends on the quality of the rough stone you have. I have seen Topaz rough go for as low as less then dollar a carat, though some will go for 6 dollars or more. Rough stone is not as valuable as the cut, polished stones made from it. Also the best golden color topaz tends to come from Brazil, not the US. It really just depends on quality and the want of a buyer. According to wikipedia:
"The biggest topaz crystal ever found, named "El Dorado", was found in Brazil in 1984. It weighs 6.2 kg and belongs to the British Royal Collection."

Your rock may be the largest found in the US, or the largest of it's time.
