QuestionQUESTION: Hi there
I have been buying estate rings (containing precious stones) because they are generally one-off pieces of jewellery and they used to be much cheaper than the normal rings. What are some things to look for when purchasing these pieces (some have incorporated platinum). I always get a professional valuation of the piece in question (JATVC in Australia).
ANSWER: When buying gemstones and diamonds in rings your doing the best thing. Use a professional person in your area to evaluate your buying.A local appraiser will know your market. Other than that by low and sell high.
Good Luck,
Gina,
I'm sorry I didn't answer your question completely. Sometimes I answer questions late at night and I'm rather tired.
I think your question was "what to look for in one of a kind pieces that used to be cheaper than normal rings"
I'm sorry but I dont understand what your asking me.
I can give you some tips on what to look for when buying generaly: 1. Check to make sure the rings are hallmarked and stamped with a metals mark.
2. It's always a good idea to ask for any paperwork on the gemstones you buy. Some people when buying feel reluctant or forget to ask.
3. It's a good idea if you buy frequently to invest in some basic gem testing instruments.
Please request a followup if I can elaborate or provide you with more information.
Sorry for the confusion,
Sincerely,

QUESTION: Hi Arthur
I know to look for 750, 375 or 925 stamped on the metal. What numeral stands for the following: platinum, 14 carat and 24 carat gold?
I always get a valuation and provenance if it is possible.
Apart from checking claws on rings and pendants, what other problems should I watch for when buying estate jewellery?
Thank you for this second reply.Can I ask for a third?
Gina
Answer750 = 18k
375 = 9k
585 = 14k
950 = Platinum
900 = Platinum
1000= 24 Karat
Additional Items to look out for when buying estate jewelry.
1. Check for black solder or (lead solder) sometimes used in place of gold. This is bad as it lowers the value of jewellery and makes it more difficult to sell.
2.Watch out for some heavy link chain that is stamped: 14K from the US. We have found a large amount of it that is brass.
3. If you buy diamonds be sure to have a moissanite Tester.
4. Watch ouy for 14K whiye gold with a heavy rhodium platting that looks like Platinum.
Good luck/
You can ask a third question
