Diamond Discoloration After Dental Restoration: Understanding the Cause

Question
10 years ago I had a diamond set in a false tooth. The tooth broke and the
dentist took out the bridge (the diamond was still in place - the porcelain
was broken below it) and the tooth was re-built, and fired at, I believe, 900
degrees. The result was, the diamond came out discolored and 'lost it's
lustre'. The lab who did this claimed that this established that the diamond
must have been fake. The source of the diamond was extremely reliable and I
believe this to be very unlikely indeed. Could a diamond be damaged at this
temperature and if so, can the damage be put right?

Answer
HI HEATHER,

I WOULD SAY THE DIAMOND GOT SMOKED AS WE SAY IN THE BUSINESS. THE TEMP WAS HIGH ENOUGH TO OXIDIZE THE SURFACE OF THE STONE SO THAT IT LOOKS SMOKEY OR DULL. IT CAN BE EASILY FIXED BY REPOLISHING THE STONE. IT IS MORE THAN LIKELY NOT A FAKE. THE STONE WOULD NEED TO BE REMOVED FROM THE TOOTH AND CLEANED UP THEN REPOLISHED. YOU DID NOT MENTION THE SIZE OF THE STONE BUT MOST DIAMONDS ARE WORTH REPOLISHING IF IT IS OVER .05 CTS.
GOOD LUCK
PETER
