Best Oil for Enhancing Stone Color and Clarity - Rockhounding Tips
QuestionHi Lisa
I went rockhounding for the first time. What is your recommendation of an oil to rub on exterior of stones to improve visability & bring out true color of specimens when I observe with a loupe.
Thanks

AnswerHi Paul,
I am assuming that you are wanting to be able to inspect the rough for facetting. I think the best thing to use is something that has a refractive index close to that of the specimen. I know baby oil is used as is refractive index liquid. As I am not a facetor nor do I specialize in rough material, I would refer you to a faceting forum where experts in this field can better assist you.
There are some experts that participate in the forums at:
www.yourgemologist.com
I also believe there is a US facetors guild forum.
Sorry I didn't have better answers for you,
Lisa
