Understanding 22KDM Gold Jewelry: Purity & Cadmium

Question

22 KDM
I was lucky enough to get this at a sale. Can you tell me anything about it? it is marked on all the pieces. 22 KDM. Thank you, Kay

Answer
Hi Kay,

22 means that the gold should be 22kt, very soft and 91.6% pure gold. 22kt and 24kt require some special care due to the softness. It is easily bent, scratched and damaged.

The KDM means that Cadmium (also known as kadium) was used to solder the piece during manufacture.  This is outlawed now in most parts of the world as it is a toxic substance. Do a google search on Cadmium and kadium for more information on this harmful chemical.  You can also search "hallmark 22 KDM" and will find a wealth of information.

Cadmium is most toxic when it is used for solder, it is a carcinogenic and is linked with breast cancer.  However, the only reports I can find regarding issues with it in jewelry are a skin irritation for some wearers.  I would definitely do your homework and research on this one.

I would also assume that the piece could be  Middle Eastern or Indian(India).
