Gemstone Identification & Appraisal Cost - 14K Gold Rings

Question
Hello,

How much should I expect to spend to have a professional jeweler determine exactly what type of gemstone(s) I have in two 14K gold ring that I'm questioning.

I was told he (the jeweler) would be using a very sophisticated & accurate gemstone 'refractometer'. I don't know that it makes a difference, but the two gemstones he will be testing is 1) White Zircon and 2) Purple Sapphire.

Can you please tell me what a reasonable cost would be to have each of these tested for authenticity? Thank you very much for any info/help.

Best Regards, Brooks

Answer
Dear Brooks,

A refractometer measures how the material of the stone bends light. Some, such as a natural zircon, bend light in a dramatic fashion and show two lines where facets come together when viewed with magnification through the table(top) of the stone.

Specific ranges of numbers are associated with different gems and that is how using a refractometer will eliminate many possibilities. A microscope view will hone in further on the id of the stone.

What you are asking for is essentially an appraisal. Most jewelers who are qualified and do accurate appraisal work will not put their name, even only spoken, on a guesstimate. You will likely be paying for appraisal and both stones should fit into one hour of work.  Where I used to work, about $75 was charged for the first hour.  Ask if it will cost any less for just the two stones.  You may not get a break but you never know.

Brooks, there you are! I hope this helps.  God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
