Drilling Holes in Agate, Onyx & Jasper: Tips & Advice

Question
QUESTION: I have purchased a diamond drill bit, and have submerged my pendant stone in water as I attempt to drill a hole. I go slow and find that I am hardly breaking the surface!! What am I doing wrong?
Do you also drill holes in pendants? If so, could I send you my stones to be drilled?
Thanks.
Shirley

ANSWER: Hi,

First how large of hole are you doing? Second what material are you drilling?  Some of these materials can be difficult.  It does take a bit of pressure to get the hole started also it helps to use the corner of the bit in other words the bit would be at an angle as opposed to 90 degree straight up and down.  This way you get it started the trick is to not wear off the diamond doing this.  Too much pressure and heat will cause the diamond to be stripped off.  So it does take a little practice and the right type of bits. (triple ripple)

Hi,

Above is a company that sells these type of bits.  They are more aggressive and last longer in my experience of trying different types.

Hope this helps you,
