Appraising Vintage Jewelry: A Guide for Pawn Shop & Estate Finds
QuestionI think that more people will be pawning or selling jewelry as the economy continues on its current path. I like the idea of vintage (used) jewelry because it can be unique and it could possibly be of value. If I find something in a pawn shop, how would I go about appraising it? Do I buy it, take it to a gemologist (or someone else) and (hopefully) return it to the pawn shop if it is not worth the price.
AnswerHello Tina and thank you for your inquiry. Usually items at pawn shops have already been tested for gold value, etc. and are sold as is with what information is given at the time of purchase. To have a vintage item appraised you should have an estate jewelry appraiser or professional jeweler specializing in vintage items. You can also do the research yourself as far as date, style, etc. There are many resources online and in books found in your local library or book store. Gemstones must be evaluated by a gemologist or professional appraiser. Most pawn shops do not accept returns and it always pays to know your seller and their policies before making a purchase. Hope this helps and good luck !
