Solid Gold vs. Gold Filled: How to Identify?

How does one know if an item is solid gold or gold filled?

Hello Michele and thank you for your inquiry. Most items have the karat gold or gold information on the back or inside of the item i.e. 14K or GF for gold filled HGE - hard gold electroplate, etc. If an item is not marked or you feel the mark is not accurate, the items should be tested with a special acid by a jeweler or someone knowledgeable in the testing of precious metals.
