Polishing Gemstones for Shine: A Guide for Jewelry Makers

Question
I make jewelries as a hobby and have decided that i can probably start selling them. My problem is some of the gemstone I bought are not shiny or they're rough. What can I use to coat and make it smooth and shine permanently?

Answer
Hi Zusana,

The only way is to polish them no coating will work.  If they are rough then they need to be cut first then pre-polished (like sanding) then finish polish.  Depending on what type of stone they need different kinds of polishing compound.  Like cerium oxide or diamond powder.
Cabs will take some kind of cabbing machine faceted stones take a faceting machine to do this.  Both need cutting wheels and polishing wheels.  Some hobbyist use tumbling machines to polish stones.  You need
buy one and follow the directions supplied.  They use polishing media and a polishing compound.

I hope this helps you.
