Cleaning Rhodium Plated Sterling Silver Rings: Care Tips for Longevity

Question
Hi Thomas,

I recently purchased a rhodium-plated sterling silver engagement/wedding ring set with a solitaire CZ stone in a 4-prong setting, and smaller bezel-set CZ stones in both of the bands. What is the best way to clean these rings and make the rhodium plating last as long as possible? You previously gave an answer in caring for CZ stones by using a gentle detergent and soft brush, but will this be too abrasive for the rhodium plating? Thanks for your help!

Carina

Answer
HI, Carina.  Thanks for the question.

The main concern as I see it is abrasives which will wear on the plated surface.  You will not be able to avoid natural abrasive contact in everyday wear but you can lessen any chances of wear caused directly by cleaning.

The gentle detergent and soft brush will work around the stone and for recesses perhaps inside the ring.  As for the surface, go ahead with the detergent but avoid any rubbing but the gentlest sort.  You can rub the moist surface with your fingers just enough to remove any dirt.  Often, simply swishing in the detergent then rinsing will do the job.

I recommend against using polishing cloths on any plated jewelry.  I have seen silver plated table ware which has been cleaned so much the plate is worn and the base metal shows through. Of course, rhodium is much more durable than sterling but enough rubbing will begin to wear on the plate.

In most cases, this kind of care should do well for your ring.  Best wishes.

God Bless and Peace.      Thomas.
