Identifying Colored Rocks: A Beginner's Guide & Potential Value

Question

colored rocks
I have been collecting rocks  as a hobby although I know nothing about them except most were polished & bought down in southwest U.S.. Can you identify any of them, esp. the green ones, and is there anything of value here? thank you, Kathy

Answer
HI Kathy and thank you for your inquiry. Rock collecting is a fascinating hobby and I would suggest that you purchase a good rock and gem book with pictures to help you identify your finds. There are a lot of good stones to be sound in the southwestern US including turquoise, jade, agate and many more. Looks like you have some jade, blue lace agate, rodocrosite and jasper. Check your local book store for the "pocket size" gem books. They are handy to carry with you and not too expensive. Then as your hobby grows, you might want to invest in a larger book or equipment to help identify your stones. Hope this helps and good luck !
