Turning a Gemstone & Jewelry Passion into a Business

Question
Hello,
I have a passion for gemstones and antique/vintage jewelry and watches. I read as mutch as possible about gems and jewelry and love to see what is for sale on the jewelry ahows on tv. So far I have only collected as a hobby but would appreciate any insight on how to make this into a possible business. I love to hunt through antique shops and flea markets for treasures and have purchased a few items on-line. I have a friend that I can refer to for jewelry repairs and am considering a home course on watch repairs. I would love to have your advice and ideas on this dream that I have. Thank you,
Gale

Answer
Hello Gale and thank you for your inquiry. The ultimate career or job is that you love your work. Knowledge is the best teacher and there are a lot of books available as I'm sure you know. There are plenty of opportunities online to open a jewelry shop in whatever design or venue you like - check out some of the online malls i.e. Ruby Lane, Antique and Collectible Exchange and others where you can create your own "storefront" and list your items for sale. Online auctions are a fun place to sell, such as ebay.com  It's good to have friends who can help, but you need to have your own set of tools of the trade.  One good book is "How to be a jewelry detective" by Jeannenne Bell.
Have the tools you need for repairs - depending on what and if you want to repair yourself. There are courses in jewelry repair at local vocational schools and online. You will find additional steps to take as you progress in going online and will need to advertise.  Actually ebay is a good place to list and get known. Make yourself a plan and then go for it !  Good Luck
