Questiongday thomas my mothers house burnt down in a bushfire and a lot of her gold jewellery melted in blobs of metal. my question is how can i retrieve the gold from these melted blobs?
AnswerMarko, thanks for this question. I am sorry about the fire, traumatic as such an event generally can be.
If the jewelry is only soiled by baked on fire residue, a good bench jeweler should be able to clean the items. The melted blobs are best treated by a refiner since this is generally not a do it yourself job considering the strong chemicals and reactions needed to recover gold.
My recommendation is to have the metal sent to a refiner if and only if there is a substantial amount there. If not, the option is to sell the material as scrap to one of the many businesses now purchasing gold items considering the high gold prices now in effect. To do this may take more than one visit to a buyer to see who will offer the best price. In any event, be prepared to hear lower prices than you might like.
I do not know of refiners to recommend in your homeland. Possibly a web search will turn up a few who will do you right.
Best Wishes to you and the family. God Bless and Peace. Thomas.
