QuestionHow can I safely remove super glue from my gold wedding band and gold and diamond engagement ring? The engagement ring nestles inside the gold band. When the glue dripped onto my finger it went in between the rings and is now dried on the outside of both gold bands as well as within the gully in which the engagement ring nestles into the wedding band. Thankfully they are not stuck together, but I am worried that any chemical used to clean off the gold will damage the diamond. I assume given the amount of glue in the gully that it will be necessary to soak the rings. Thanks for your help!
AnswerDear Gabrielle,
Your problem has happened to other folks and some got the rings cemented to their fingers in the meantime. We can solve it and get rid of the glue. : )
There is one chemical which does the best job at removing super glue and it will not hurt your diamond at all. That chemical is acetone. You can get it at home supply stores and some hardware store. They sell the stuff in gallons but should also have small containers. But, before you go out to purchase acetone try this:
Fingernail polish remover
For a long time fingernail polish remover was mostly acetone. Now, many of the removers have another solvent but it is worth a try to see if it works for super glue.
Yes, you will need to soak the rings. Do this in a jar with a lit closed snugly because the fumes are flammable and the smell is not very pleasing or healthy. Soak over night, take out the rings, rinse, see if the glue is gone or if what remains will peel off. Overnight should be long enough but I really don't know without actually trying it with your rings.
Acetone is safe with diamonds and most gemstones. You do not want to put lapis, turquoise, mosaic assembled stones or plastic stones in acetone. If dyes or filled with plastic to make it more durable, the lapis or turquoise can be damaged. Assembled gems can come apart and plastic costume stone can simply melt away.
Gabrielle, if you need any more information regarding this question, please use the follow up to get back with me. Also, if you get a chance to rate the answer please do that so I know how it is going on the questioners end. Fair enough?
God Bless and Peace. Thomas. Did I see you smile? Your rings will be fine again.
