Rock Identification: Help Identify a Multi-Colored, Sparkly Rock

Question

Rock's Image
My dad went outside today and came back with a ridged multi-colored, and those are the sparkles on it, the base color is black, and we don't know what type of a rock it is. We tried searching it but it wasn't what the computer said because when you rub your fingers against it then no glitter comes off. Please answer as soon as possible. Thank-you!
From,
Kylie

Answer
Hello Kylie and thank you for writing. It is difficult for me to tell by the picture what you have. Sounds like some sort of feldspar or azurite (blue matrix). I would suggest picking up a rock identification book or take your find to a local rock shop or gemologist for identification. One book that I am familiar with is "Smithsonian Handbooks: Rocks & Minerals (Smithsonian Handbooks) by Chris Pellant". Small format and very inexpensive but a wealth of knowledge and pictures. It's always exciting to find beautiful rocks and sometimes they turn out to be valuable ! A grand hobby. Good luck in your research !
